Man and Van Kingston Vale Health and Safety Policy

Man and Van Kingston Vale is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety in all areas of our work, including house moves, office relocations, loading, transport and unloading.

We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance. We aim not only to comply with the law but to continuously improve our standards and performance in health and safety across our removal services.

Health and Safety Objectives

Our main health and safety objectives are to:

Prevent injury and ill health arising from our work activities.

Provide and maintain safe vehicles, equipment and systems of work.

Ensure that all staff are competent to carry out their tasks safely through appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision.

Identify hazards, assess risks and implement proportionate control measures.

Consult with workers on health and safety matters and encourage active participation.

Protect customers, visitors and the public from risks associated with our removal operations.

Monitor, review and improve our health and safety arrangements on a regular basis.

Management Responsibilities

The management of Man and Van Kingston Vale has overall responsibility for ensuring that adequate arrangements are in place to manage health and safety. This includes providing sufficient resources, time and support to implement this policy effectively.

Management will:

Set clear health and safety standards and communicate them to all staff.

Ensure that risk assessments are carried out for key activities such as manual handling, loading and unloading, driving, use of equipment and working at customer premises.

Ensure that vehicles are maintained in a safe condition and that appropriate checks are completed before use.

Provide suitable work equipment for lifting, securing and transporting goods safely.

Arrange for health and safety training appropriate to each role, including induction training for new starters.

Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.

Review this health and safety policy regularly and revise it as necessary in light of changes in operations, legislation or best practice.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees and regular contractors of Man and Van Kingston Vale share responsibility for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions.

All staff are expected to:

Follow all safety instructions, procedures and training provided.

Use vehicles, tools and equipment only for their intended purpose and in accordance with training.

Carry out manual handling tasks using safe techniques and request assistance or equipment where necessary.

Wear any personal protective equipment provided when required for the task.

Report hazards, defects, accidents, near misses or unsafe conditions to management without delay.

Act responsibly at customer premises, respecting property and personal safety at all times.

Refrain from working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or substances that may impair judgement or performance.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Risk assessments are carried out to identify hazards associated with our removal services and to determine appropriate control measures. These assessments cover, as a minimum, manual handling of furniture and boxes, loading and unloading of vehicles, securing loads for transit, vehicle movements, working on driveways and in restricted spaces, and working inside customer homes and business premises.

From these assessments, safe working procedures are developed and implemented. These include methods for lifting and carrying, team lifting for heavy or awkward items, using moving equipment such as trolleys where appropriate, safe stacking and securing of loads, safe positioning of vehicles, and measures to prevent slips, trips and falls.

Manual Handling and Lifting

Manual handling is a significant part of our daily work, and we give it particular attention. Employees receive training in safe lifting and carrying techniques, including assessment of the load, planning the route, maintaining good posture and avoiding unnecessary strain.

Wherever reasonably practicable, mechanical aids or additional manpower will be used for heavy, bulky or difficult items. Staff are encouraged to refuse to lift items that they consider unsafe and to seek guidance or assistance from management.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

All vehicles used by Man and Van Kingston Vale must be roadworthy and suitable for the type of work undertaken. Regular inspections, servicing and maintenance are arranged, and drivers are expected to carry out basic pre-use checks before each journey.

Drivers must comply with road traffic law and drive in a manner that is safe, courteous and appropriate to the conditions. Loads must be properly distributed and secured to prevent movement during transit. Drivers are expected to plan routes sensibly and allow sufficient time to carry out work safely without rushing.

Customer Premises and Public Protection

When working at customer homes or business premises, we take care to protect both people and property. This may include using protective coverings where appropriate, maintaining clear walkways, and positioning equipment to minimise obstruction and trip hazards.

Our staff are instructed to be mindful of children, pets and members of the public who may be present. Where necessary, access areas may be temporarily restricted while heavy items are being moved. We aim to keep noise, disruption and risks to a minimum throughout the removal process.

Training, Information and Supervision

Man and Van Kingston Vale provides information and training to ensure that employees understand the risks associated with their work and know how to control them. Training may cover induction, manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, incident reporting and emergency arrangements.

Supervision is provided proportionate to the experience and competence of staff. Less experienced workers may be paired with more experienced colleagues until they are confident and capable of working safely on their own.

Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement

All accidents, near misses, property damage and significant safety concerns must be reported to management as soon as possible. Reports are recorded, investigated and reviewed to identify lessons and actions for improvement.

We encourage open communication about safety and do not tolerate victimisation of anyone who raises a genuine concern. Feedback from staff and customers is welcomed as a way to enhance our health and safety performance.

Policy Review and Communication

This Health and Safety Policy is communicated to all employees and made available to customers on request. It will be reviewed at least annually, and sooner if there are significant changes in our work activities, legal requirements or recognised best practice.

By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Man and Van Kingston Vale aims to deliver reliable, efficient and safe removal services for every customer and every move.
